Brennan had been up, awake, and working when Beck called.

“We have an address that might be connected to the suspect.”

“Where? How’d you get it?”

Beck said, “It’s in Dongan Hills on Staten Island.”

“Staten Island?”

“Yes. I’ll text you the address. How about you start heading out here? We can talk more while you’re on your way. Figure out where to meet. How fast do you think you can get here?”

Brennan checked her watch. Half-past midnight.

“I don’t know. I should arrange for backup.”

Beck said, “I don’t think you need that.”

“Why?”

“I doubt the bad guy is here. I’ll explain when I see you. You should get moving.”

“If the suspect isn’t there, who is?”

“Somebody who might be connected to him.”

“Listen, I can’t run around blind. Tell me what’s going on?”

Beck’s first impulse was to hang up and do whatever he could without her. Too late for that. Brennan wouldn’t relent now. But he had to make sure she didn’t do something rash.

“Okay, but I have to make it brief. Then you decide if you want to come out here. I found someone who I think has been supplying drugs to the suspect. That person led me to someone more connected to the bad guy. That led me to finding out a name and address this asshole is using. I doubt he’d use his real name or address, but I still need to check it out, see if the maniac just made it all up or if there’s some kind of connection.”

Brennan asked, “Do you know who is living there?”

“The house belongs to an Italian family of three. And the house isn’t near where I think the killer is based.”

“How’d you find out all this?” Before Beck could answer Brennan said, “Never mind.”

“Right. I don’t have enough time to explain even if I wanted to. We should move on this fast.”

“What if you’re wrong, Beck? What if he’s in that house? You want me and my driver to go in there without backup to take down a giant who’s killed two people, abducted your friend, and tried to burn down your house?”

Running full blast for twelve hours, dealing with everything, including a brawl at the gym, didn’t help Beck’s focus or patience. He forced himself to give this one more try.

He tried to speak calmly. “I don’t believe he’s there. Like I said, I don’t believe a murderer would use his real name and address? And so far, the name doesn’t even match the address. How’s it going to look if you show up with a SWAT team for nothing? I assume you’d have a hard time explaining that to your boss.”

“That’s none of your concern.”

Beck said, “Look, I’m trying to keep you in the loop so you don’t accuse me of going off on my own. All I want to do right now is find out how this murdering son of a bitch came up with this name and address.”

“What’s the name?”

“Billy Lindberg.”

“And the address?”

“Where are you now, Brennan?”

“My apartment. It’s near One PP.”

“I’ll text you an address.
